Video: Effects of japa syndrome on individual and Nigeria

By: Olayinka Awofadeju.

"Japa" refers to the act of leaving one's home country, often used in the context of Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad. The effects of the "japa syndrome" can impact individuals who leave for improved prospects and contribute to a brain drain, affecting Nigeria's workforce and development. It's a term that reflects the broader trend of migration for better opportunities.

Indeed, moving to foreign countries for better opportunities doesn't guarantee easy success. Success abroad often requires hard work, adaptability, and adherence to laws and regulations. Contrary to misconceptions, financial success isn't found on the streets, and individuals must actively pursue their goals. Additionally, maintaining a lawful and disciplined lifestyle is crucial for integration and success in developed countries with stringent legal systems.

If schooling was difficult in Nigeria, why are those running to UK calling Nigerians for help to write their thesis and assignment for them over there? The problem with our youths is not bad government, but bad culture which elders couldn't tolerate. The same shady deals called yahoo and fraud they were engaged with in Nigeria, many of them are still doing in abroad.

If anyone want to travel, I find no issue with it. But the rate at which Nigerians are selling their properties in the name of japa is alerming. What if they were deported after few months or years, what are they coming home to meet?

One man was talking one day on television, he said "anyone who sold his house and other properties for uncertainty in abroad is mad". Standing on this premise, how can reasonable person, doing a good job and giving to the needy here in Nigeria sell all his properties for uncertainty? With a video circulated recently, Nigerians in UK collecting free food at the stores to eat. The promised job which they paid whooping amount for from Nigeria became scam.

Those that were better in terms of finance in Nigeria became food beggars. Sleeping beside the roads and under tent.

Where Nigerians were sleeping in Canada

Another video sent from Canada, Nigerians sleeping under tent in an area looked like bush. The man talking in the video said one Nigerian died there recently. The question is what's the problem with Nigeria that made these people sold their properties to be begging for food, sleeping under tent in the cold weather and beside the road and in the stores?

Video of condition of Nigerians in abroad

As worst as Nigeria may be assumed to be, it is still better than the conditions Nigerians are putting themselves in abroad. Nigeria is undergoing change presently, and we all knows that things are always tough when there is change of system.

If we all run abroad, who and who will make Nigeria better? The effect of japa on Nigeria, many hospitals are having issue of staff, doctors and nurses are leaving Nigeria in mass. Lecturers are equally leaving, many other organizations too are feeling the impact of japa which in one way or the other affecting economy of Nigeria.

If you kill economy of your country to build another man's country, will you not one day return to your country? Some will say what am I coming back for, but during COVID-19, many were calling on federal government to come and take them back home. During Ukraine and Russia war and when war broke out between Israel and Hamas, many were calling upon federal government to bring them back home. The home you refused to join hands to build, the home you rejected initially and the home you sold everything you possess to leave. Coming back to Nigeria you didn't build, where are you coming to stay?

Nigerians should think of these before selling all they possessed and travel. Let us build Nigeria together, Nigeria will be better.

Federal government is doing all they could do to haste the change and let Nigerians start enjoying. Nigeria will be great once again.
