NIGERIA TAKES CENTER STAGE AT COP28 CLIMATE CHANGE SUMMIT IN DUBAI
By Elizabeth Ganiyu
As the world gathers in Dubai for the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Nigeria is emerging as a prominent voice in the global effort to combat climate change. With its ambitious commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change, Nigeria is showcasing its leadership in addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time.
At the heart of Nigeria's climate action lies its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), a roadmap for reducing the country's emissions by 20% unconditionally and up to 40% conditionally by 2030. Recognizing the oil and gas sector's significant contribution to emissions, Nigeria is actively pursuing strategies to transition to cleaner energy sources, including natural gas and renewable energy.
Beyond mitigation, Nigeria is also taking concrete steps to adapt to the impacts of climate change, which are already being felt across the country. From promoting climate-smart agriculture to developing early warning systems, Nigeria is investing in resilience-building measures to safeguard its communities and ecosystems.
Nigeria's participation at COP28 extends beyond its domestic efforts. The country is actively engaging in discussions and negotiations on various climate change issues, advocating for increased financial support from developed countries to support climate action in developing nations, and collaborating with other African countries to advance the continent's climate change agenda.
As COP28 progresses, Nigeria's contributions to the global climate conversation are gaining recognition. The country's leadership and commitment to addressing climate change serve as an inspiration to other developing nations, demonstrating that even in the face of significant challenges, climate action is not only necessary but also attainable.
The success of COP28 will hinge on the collective action of all parties
