2024 World Theater Day: Let's work for sustainability of theater legacies among future generations to boost the state economy, Gov. Adeleke tells stakeholders

The Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke has urged the people of the state, especially, theatre stakeholders to sustain the legacies of the sector among future generations, thereby redeeming its glory for the benefit of the state.

The Governor gave the advice at the year 2024 World Theater Day celebration, held in Osogbo, the State Capital.

Governor Adeleke, who spoke through  the Vice- Chairman, Osun State Council for Art and Culture, Hon. Seyi Orolugbagbe, stressed that theater goes beyond entertainment, but a wealth creator, and employer of labour.

He added that Osun remains the hub of theater practice, stating that the State has many iconic figures in the industry such as, Late Oyin Adejobi; Late Duro ladipo, Kareem Adepoju, popularly known as Baba Wande, Ray  Eyiwumi and Kola Ogunmola among others, who had their exploits beyond the shores of Nigeria.

The Governor however posited that the legacies would be properly sustained when the state Council for Art and Culture and various private theatre groups across the state take necessary steps to safeguard its existence in the face of evolving art forms and changing societal dynamics.

The Executive Secretary, Osun State Council for Art and Culture, Mrs Solape Abolarin in her key note address appreciated Governor Adeleke for approving the year 2024 World Theater Day, pointing out that the programme was last held in 2021. She added that this year's programme is a core event of the International Theatre Institute being celebrated globally on 27th of March of every year.

In their separate remarks, the Guest Speaker, Mr. Oyetunde Oyesiji and the Governor, Osun Chapter of Theater Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN); Comrade Hafeez Olakunle, who dwelled extensively on the theme of the programme "Unbinding Nigeria's Creative Economy", advanced that culture is enough to build the economy of the state and the nation as a whole if well utilized.

They both enjoined parents and guardians to encourage their children to adequately exhibit their talents, by venturing into theater Art for their own benefit and the entire sate.

The programme, which was graced by the management and staff of the State Council for Art and Culture and several entertainers, featured activities such as cultural dance, drama presentation as well as solo performances.
