Power of Press and Press of Power: Bridging the Lacuna in the Quest for Good Governance in Nigeria. JABU 11th Inaugural lecture


Joseph Ayo Babalola University's 11th Inaugural lecture delivered by Professor Tokunbo Alex Adaja, the first professor of the Department of Mass Communication, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State on Power of Press and Press of Power: Bridging the Lacuna in the Quest for Good Governance in Nigeria.

The inaugural lecture took place at Oba Oladele Olasore Hall, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State on 8th May, 2025.

While delivering the lecture, Professor Adaja noted that press performs and occupies a space that cannot be filled by another group of persons or institution. The power of the press to carry out certain functions and responsibilities in the society. The functions and responsibilities are the exclusive preserve of the press.

He equally stressed on the press of power, Bridging the Lacuna in the Quest for Good Governance in Nigeria. He said, it is one thing to possess power, it is another thing to exercise the power. According to, the power of the press must translate into action, else they become theoretical formulations. If the powers are judiciously used to bring about the required and anticipated change in the society, the press becomes 'press of powers'.

He concluded that it is not right for the Nigerian press to hands-off their responsibilities simply because the country has returned to representative democracy.
