Twenty Five Lawmakers Defect from PDP to ACCORD Party
Twenty five members of the Osun State House of Assembly who were elected under Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in year 2023 announced their defection after the parliamentary meeting yesterday from PDP, to the Accord Party.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, the legislators said their decision was reached after consultations and internal deliberations and they have submitted their resignation letter to PDP weeks past.
The lawmakers proceeded to the Banquet Hall to meet with the governor and top Accord Party leaders after the parliamentary meeting where the formal declaration was officially made by the Speaker.
The Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun, was among the twenty five lawmakers who announced their defection.
According to the statement, the legislators reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Governor, His Excellency Sen. Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, and their commitment to quality representation, transparency and responsive leadership.
It added that the defecting members urged their supporters and associates “to remain steadfast and join them as they embark on this new political chapter.
The statement noted that the lawmaker’s decision is to align with the governor’s new party aimed at ensuring continuity in governance and accelerating development across Osun State.Political party profiles
With the defection of the 25 members, including the Speaker, the 26 members of House of Assembly is now left with honorable Femi Popoola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the only opposition lawmaker in the House.
Reacting to the defection, People's Democracy Party Hon. Seyi Bamidele, Secretary, Caretaker Committee Osun State Chapter said "while this development had been the subject of speculation in recent times, the formal confirmation by the affected lawmakers has now put the matter beyond conjecture. As a democratic institution, the PDP recognizes that freedom of association is a constitutional right, and the lawmakers are legally entitled to make their political choices.
However, the party considers this decision deeply disappointing and politically unjustifiable. The PDP provided the platform, structure, and goodwill through which these lawmakers secured electoral victories and earned the mandate of their constituents. To abandon that mandate and the party that nurtured their political rise at a moment of internal challenges raises serious questions about political consistency, loyalty, and ideological conviction.
Defection under such circumstances does little to strengthen democratic culture. Rather, it undermines the sanctity of party ideology and the trust reposed in elected representatives by the electorate under a specific political platform.
Nevertheless, the Osun PDP remains undeterred. Our party is bigger than any individual ambition, and our structures across the state remain intact, vibrant, and committed to the collective aspiration of the people of Osun State. The ongoing efforts to reposition and strengthen the party will continue with renewed determination.
