IPC-SPJ Hub CONDEMNS THE UNLAWFUL DETENTION OF OLALEKAN AKINDOJU; DEMANDS IMMEDIATE APOLOGY
The International Press Centre, IPC, Lagos-Nigeria, through its Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) hub condemns the unlawful detention of Olalekan Akindoju, the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osun State Council, by Policemen at his residence in Osogbo on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
Speaking via a phone call with the Press Freedom Officer, IPC-SPJ Hub, the affected journalist, Olalekan Akindoju confirmed that the incident occurred around 6a.m at his residence.
“They invaded my residence this morning around 6a.m, arrested me and seized my phone without any valid explanation. All attempts to identify myself as a journalist failed, as they refused to listen to me or give me opportunity to call anyone,” Akindoju explained.
“I was detained for almost five hours before I was released after the intervention of colleagues and the NUJ. The Police claimed it was a case of mistaken identity,” Akindoju further stated.
The Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade in a statement said, “this incident is highly condemnable, and the Police must do due diligence in gathering their intelligence and information before initiating arrests, especially as it pertains to journalists.”
SPJ-Hub reinforces the need to safeguard press freedom and put a stop to all forms of harassment, intimidation and unlawful arrests against journalists.
SPJ-Hub is therefore calling on the Nigeria Police Force through the Commissioner of Police, Osun State CP Ibrahim Gotan, to officially apologize to Olalekan Akindoju and properly investigate the incident, ensuring that the operatives involved face the consequences of their actions.
