NUJ Osun Executives Seek Stronger Media-Academic Collaboration with FedPoly Ede, Osun State University
The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, has intensified efforts to strengthen collaboration between the media and academic institutions, following a series of courtesy visits to the management of Federal Polytechnic, Ede, and Osun State University.
This is according to statement issued by the Secretary of the NUJ Osun Council, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju.
During a visit to the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, the NUJ delegation was received by the Rector, Dr. Sani Man Yahaya, who emphasized the indispensable role of journalists in society.
He noted that without the media, many significant events and developments would go undocumented, stressing that journalism remains a cornerstone of societal growth and accountability.
Dr. Yahaya highlighted the rapid growth of the institution’s Mass Communication Department, which he said commenced operations less than three years ago but has already become the most sought-after programme in the polytechnic.
The Rector further expressed the institution’s readiness to partner with the NUJ to promote the growth of journalism in Osun State.
He explained that such collaboration would not only benefit the union but also enhance the academic and professional development of Mass Communication students in the institution.
He also called on practicing journalists to take mentorship seriously, urging them to guide and nurture younger professionals to ensure the sustainability and ethical standards of the profession.
The NUJ executives also extended their visit to Osun State University, where they were received by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye, alongside other members of the institution’s management team.
Professor Adebooye congratulated the newly inaugurated NUJ executives and commended journalists in Osun State for their role in projecting the university in a positive light.
He acknowledged the media’s contributions to shaping public perception and fostering societal development, describing journalism as a vital partner in nation-building.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the NUJ in Osun State, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, explained that the visits were aimed at strengthening ties and fostering mutual collaboration between the union and tertiary institutions in the state.
He lauded the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, for producing competent graduates and reiterated the union’s commitment to supporting capacity building within the media space.
Comrade Aboderin disclosed that the NUJ is particularly interested in collaborating with the institution to train journalists on emerging technological trends in the media industry, including the application of Artificial Intelligence.
At Osun State University, the NUJ Chairman also praised the management for the notable progress recorded in the institution, while calling for sustained collaboration between the university and media practitioners to further promote development and information dissemination.
