PRESIDENT TINUBU'S TRIBUTE FOR LATE ROTIMI AKEREDOLU, CALLS HIM BROTHER

Image
It is a difficult task to have to pen a tribute and sing a dirge for a departing soul. It is a more difficult job in our African culture when one is compelled to do so for a younger person. Here am I having the difficult job of singing a dirge for Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, my beloved brother, confidant, political soulmate, and the Executive Governor of Ondo State.  It is an impossible task to fully capture in words Rotimi’s towering figure and his human essence. Rotimi was a man who moved our nation towards equity, fairness and justice in his strident advocacy against every form of injustice in our country through the instrumentality of the law as a senior advocate, attorney-general of his beloved state, as President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Governor of Ondo State.  In a challenging moment of our statehood when marauding agents of darkness spread their tentacles  across our country, Rotimi was a strong voice in wilderness calling us to rethink our security architecture

WILL THE NAIRA EVER RISE AGAIN?

Image
BY SIMON KOLAWOLE Someone recently said on social media, and I agree in toto, that the exchange rate has the biggest impact on the costs of goods and services in Nigeria — far more than the price of petrol. I somehow never dwelt on this fact, even though it is bleeding obvious that movements in exchange rates have direct impact on the cost of living in an import-reliant country such as ours. All along, I had been more concerned about the price of petrol, maybe because transportation costs react instantly to the pump price. The impact of exchange rate changes can take weeks, even months, to reflect on prices. We can understand this from the catastrophe that followed the recent attempt to float the naira. Conventional wisdom is that if the gap between the official and parallel markets is bridged, there would be a semblance of market-determined rate. It was optimistically projected that while the official rate may move up, the parallel rate would come down and the unidentical twins would

HOW BAD MEDIA CAUSED THE PROFESSIONAL 'DEMISE' OF MOFONROYE

Image
.                        DR. ONO BOBI Last year when Prince 'Tunji Moronfoye was still the Kwara state publicity scribe of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, I had written to him when he goofed in one of his write-ups to state categorically that he was unfit for the job even if he was a graduate of English handling media jobs for the opposition party. I had further stated plaintively that he was merely a muckraker, a pathological liar and a very bad writer with jerky grammar. I had tutored him on propaganda stating that propaganda which has three main features can only succeed on well researched and investigated facts not on the 'hearsay facts' of his dilapidating party, the PDP. Moforonye soon saw himself in a web of controversies that later turned the leadership of his party against him in Kwara State. The leadership of the party found regrettably that the man was indeed unfit for the publicity job of the party, surely not cut out for the image making of a major oppositi
